The Lemon of Sorrento, known as Ovale di Sorrento, is a product that distinguishes itself qualitatively from similar products thanks to the peculiar characteristics of shelf life and aroma typical of the local variety. The latter bred with the unique cultivation techniques used in the Sorrento Peninsula, which allow to enhance its specific qualities, has obtained the community recognition of Typical Geographical Indication (I.G.P.) which protects and enhances the exclusive and incomparable Lemon of Sorrento I.G.P.
The Lemon of Sorrento I.G.P. it is cultivated in the Sorrento Peninsula in the territory of the municipalities of: Massa Lubrense, Meta, Piano di Sorrento, Sant'Agnello, Sorrento, Vico Equense and in the municipalities of Capri and Anacapri. The PGI emphasizes the relationship between the specific geographical region and the name of the product, when a specific quality, certain reputation or other particular characteristic is essentially attributable to the geographical origin. The Lemon of Sorrento has obtained the protection of the geographical indication since 1 February 2001.
The Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) is reserved only for Sorrento lemons obtained in compliance with a production specification, i.e. a set of prescriptions which all producers who use the collective brand must strictly comply with. Furthermore, to ensure that the product meets the requirements of the production specification, IS.ME.CERT, the control body designated by the Agriculture Department of the Campania Region, prepares analytical and objective controls using specific means and arranging permanently of industry experts.
